Major General Matthew Sykes CVO is the Chief Executive of Elizabeth Finn Care, a national poverty relief charity. Prior to this appointment he served in the British Army for 35 years.
Elizabeth Finn Care
Matthew Sykes has been Chief Executive of Elizabeth Finn Care since May 2010. Elizabeth Finn Care is a charity that gives direct support to individuals in financial need and through Turn2us helps millions more to gain access online or through a free helpline to welfare benefits, charitable grants from over 3,500 funds and other financial help.
British Army
Prior to joining Elizabeth Finn Care in May 2010, Matthew Sykes was a Major General in the British Army.
He joined the Royal Artillery in 1976 and was Commanding Officer 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery from 1994-1997. Further appointments included:
- 1997-1999: Strategic Policy Chief, NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE)
- 2000-2002: Chief Co-ordinator of Joint Firepower, NATO's Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC)
- 2002-2004: Director Corporate Communications for the British Army, UK Ministry of Defence
- 2005-2006: Director Royal Artillery, UK Ministry of Defence
- 2007-2010: Defence Services Secretary, Royal Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom
- 2009-2010: Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Personnel), UK Ministry of Defence
His operational experience included several tours in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.
In April 2010 he was appointed by Her Majesty The Queen to be a Companion of the Royal Victorian Order. He retired from the Army in July 2010. Other current appointments include:
