Forestville means "town in the forest". This area was originally thick wooded forest until James Ffrench settled here and began felling timber in 1856 and eventually built a small wharf on bantry bay to ship timber to Sydney. Ffrench later acquired more land in the adjacent suburb which bears his name, Frenchs Forest.
Commercial area
Local businesses thrive in the recently redeveloped local shopping centre and nearby Forestway shopping centre. Forestville is also home to the office and call centre of the
NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Service (WIRES).Housing
Primarily, the suburb has consisted of low density housing. However, with the recent expansion of the Forestville Shopping Centre and the construction of medium density apartments along the edge of Warringah Road, this has gradually begun to change.
