Edgar Sanabria (October 3, 1911April 24, 1989) was a Venezualan lawyer, diplomat, and politician, was a member of the provisional "Government Junta", after the overthrow of Marcos Pérez Jiménez on January 23, 1958, and interim caretaker President of Venezuela in 1959.

Early life and career

Sanabria was born in Caracas, studied at the school of the French Priests, the Institute San Pablo and the Caracas Grammar school (later re-baptized like Andrés Bello grammar school), where he graduated highschool in 1928. After graduation Sanabria entered the law studies department af the Central University of Venezuela, and graduated in 1935 with a degree in political science. He would obtain the title of professor in the Pedagogical Institute of Caracas the following year. Between 1936 and 1941,Sanabria would be a professor at both the Andrés Bello grammar school and the Normal school of Caracas. He would also from 1936 and 1958, occupy the chairs of Civil Law and Law History, at the Central University of Venezuela. Sanabria would was serve also assistant director of the National Library from 1936-1940. In 1941 he was ordered to the General Consulate of Venezuela in New York City, and legal consultant of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and the ministry of property and promotion (1942-1943). As director of the Ministry of Education (1944), he was vocal member of the Council of the Faculty of Law at the Central University of Venezuela, being also professor of Roman Law at the Andrés Bello Catholic University (1955-1959), as well in the Santa María University (1953-1956). Sanabria was also a professor of Law History at the Cooperation School of the Armed Forces.

After the overthrow of Marcos Pérez Jiménez, was named secretary of the Government Junta. Sanabria replaced Wolfgang Larrazábal as interim president. During his short time as president, put in execution the Law of Complementary Tax and the Law of Universities, in which the statute of the university autonomy is recovered. Also, transfer the presidency to the elected candidate (Rómulo Betancourt), at the 1958 elections.

After this, held various posts in the Venezuelan diplomatic corps, being ambassador to the Vatican City (1959-1963), ambassador in Switzerland (1964-1968), Austria (1968-1970), and finally ambassador ad honorem at the Foreign Affairs Ministry. In recognition of the important intellectual work that he developed, in 1940 was selected an individual of number of the Venezuelan Academy of the Language, in 1946 of the Academy of Political Sciences and, in 1963 of the National Academy of History. He died in Caracas in 1989.
