The airport is relatively small in size, but its runway has the capability and length to accept jets up to the Boeing 767. It serves as the hub for Vanuatu's flag carrier airline, Air Vanuatu.
The airport was named after Lt-Col. Harold Bauer, a fighter pilot in the US Marine Corps during World War II.
Bauerfield International Airport was requisitioned by the United States Air force during World War II. Prior to that time it was part of a plantation acreage owned by Henri Russet.
