The Contemporary Singers

"The Contemporary Singers" were an amateur chamber choir based in Sydney, Australia, dedicated exclusively to the choral music of the 20th century. The group was formed in late 1986 by visiting Canadian composer David Colwell, and directed from mid 1987 until around 1999 by Antony Walker and Elliott Gyger. It varied in size between 12 and 30 voices, and developed a repertoire of over 70 works by about 55 different composers, giving Australian premiere performances of many significant works in the genre. Among its members were several young , including Elliott Gyger, Stephen Adams, and Matthew Hindson. Some members also sang with the Sydney Chamber Choir. After the choir's dissolution, many members went on to sing with the professional choir, Cantillation.
