History

With the area initially being occupied by workers in Oldham's cotton mills, much of Hollinwood's more recent growth potential was due to the Ferranti factory which produced power transformers in its heyday. Later the factory produced container lifting trucks as the building had the height to do so. The transformer works building is now used as a newspaper printing plant. A neighbouring Ferranti factory produced electricity meters. The meter factory was sold to Siemens in the 1980s and became known as FML. The FML factory was eventually closed by Siemens.Hollinwood was home to the Roxy Cinema which was popular for both the local and wider community. However, the cinema closed in 2005 after years of falling attendance. Roxy Cinema was demolished between February and March 2007.

Governance

Hollinwood was once a chapelry of the ecclesiastical parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham, in the Hundred of Salford.

For a time, part of Hollinwood lay within the Chadderton Urban District in the administrative county of Lancashire.

Politically the Hollinwood ward is held by the Liberal Democrats with two councillors and the Labour Party with one Councillor. The ward changes seats between the two parties with each election that passes.

Hannah Beswick ( – 1785), was a woman from Birchin Bower, in Hollinwood, who had a pathological fear of premature burial. Her fear was strong enough for her to draw up a will which stated that her body was kept above ground, and that once a year, in the presence of two witnesses, the veil was to be lifted from her face, to look for signs of life. This eccentric will made Beswick a celebrity, and her mummified body was donated to the Manchester Museum and put on public display in the entrance hall, where she acquired the soubriquet the Manchester Mummy.
