Examination for Japanese University Admission
- Examination for Japanese University Admission
The nihongo|Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students|日本留学試験|Nihon Ryūgaku Shiken; literally, "Japan Foreign Study Test"), more commonly referred to as simply the Examination for Japanese University Admission (EJU), is a standardized test that began in 2002 as a replacement for both the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and the General Examination for Foreign Students, the latter of which is no longer administered. It has quickly become the standard admission test for non-Japanese students who are applying to study in Japan, either at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Subject matter
The test is primarily a test of language proficiency, similar to the JLPT, but also integrates several subject tests. The specific subject tests required depend on the universities to which the test-taker is applying, but the possibilities as of the 2005 test are: Japanese as a Foreign Language, Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), Japan and the World (a test of liberal arts reasoning ability), and Mathematics. Test-takers may not take both the Science and Japan and the World tests.
Administration
There are several testing locations distributed throughout Japan. Additionally, there are currently test sites in several East Asian countries, with the notable exclusion of Mainland China (including Hong Kong and Macau). There are currently no test sites located in Europe, Africa, North America, or South America. Applicants to Japanese universities from these regions usually travel to Japan if they are required to take the EJU.
The test is administered twice a year. As of 2007, the two administrations take place on June 17 and November 11.
