Thoroughbred racehorse who raced in theAmerican where he won theBelmont Stakes . Bred at August Belmont, Jr.'sHaras de Villers inFoucarmont inUpper Normandy ,France , he was foaled inEngland . He was sired by French-bredNegofol , who would later be imported to stand atXalapa Farm inKentucky where he would sirePreakness Stakes winner, Coventry. His mare was Hour Glass who was bred inFrance but then sent toEngland , where Hourless was born at Southcourt Stud inSouthcote, Bedfordshire , owned byLeopold de Rothschild . WithWorld War I raging inEurope , in 1915 both Hour Glass and Hourless were brought to the United States.Raced by
August Belmont, Jr. , Hourless was trained by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee,Sam Hildreth . In 1916 he was one of the top two-year-olds in the United States, winning a number of important races including theGrand Union Hotel Stakes atSaratoga Race Course . For the year, he was ranked second only to Campfire.In his three-year-old season, no U.S. Triple Crown series had yet been formalized and Hourless did not run in the
Kentucky Derby or thePreakness Stakes which were held on the same day. After other entrants were scratched, the October 18, 1917 John R. McLean Memorial Championship atLaurel Park Racecourse inMaryland turned into amatch race between Hourless and Wilfrid Viau'sKentucky Derby winner, Omar Khayyam. Earlier that year, Omar Khayyam had beaten Hourless in theLawrence Realization Stakes and in the Brooklyn Derby. This time, however, Hourless won by a length and at the end of the year shared the 1917American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse honors.A successful sire
Retired to stud, Hourless notably sired Mike Hall, the 1928
