Joseph 'Joe' Dodds (born Carluke, Lanarkshire, 14 July, 1887, died 14 October, 1965) was a Scottish international footballer who played club football for Celtic (in two spells), Cowdenbeath and Queen of the South. Dodds was unbeaten in his 3 full caps for Scotland. Dodds was a quick and dependable left back. Celtic (1st spell)
Joe Dodds joined Celtic in the summer of 1908 from Carluke Milton Rovers. At Celtic Joe Dodds' appearances included 351 league games. While at Celtic Dodds gained 3 full Scotland caps including playing in the 3-1 Hampden Park win over England on
April 4 1914. This followed draws against Wales (0-0 at home onFebruary 28 ) and Northern Ireland (1-1 away onMarch 14 ) of the same year giving Dodds an unbeaten full international record.Cowdenbeath
Dodds left Celtic in 1920 to join Cowdenbeath then of the Central League, who were offering him more money.
Celtic (2nd spell)
Dodds returned to Celtic a year later for one last season, but resigned in August 1922 after a dispute about a benefit.
Queen of the South
This time after Celtic, Joe Dodds went to Queen of the South in a move that surprised many as he had been expected to sign for then top division Morton. Dodds joined Queens as player coach. Dumfries club then in their third season. Dodds made his Queens debut onOctober 28 1922 against Royal Albert at Raploch Park, Larkhall. Dodds remained at Queens until his retirement in 1928.Joe Dodds' time at Queens seen the club developing solidly.
At Queens in 1922-23 Joe Dodds played alongside another experienced signing, ex Liverpool
F.A. Cup finalistBob McDougall , in the last season Queens when played in a regional set up. Queens were unbeated in winning the Western League that season.With
Bob McDermid also having joined them Joe Dodds was with Queen of the South entering the Scottish Football League in 1923-34 at it's lowest level, the newly created Scottish Third Division, finishing a respectable third and winning the Scottish Qualifying Cup.Later years
In 1936 Dodds went back to Celtic as assistant trainer. During the War, he served in
