Alexandrinsky Theater

Alexandrinsky Theater

The Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theater ( _ru. Российский государственный академический театр драмы им. А. С. Пушкина) or Alexandrinsky Theater ( _ru. Александринский театр) is a historical theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

History

The Alexandrinsky Theater is the oldest Russian national theatre. It was founded on August 30, 1756 by a Senate decree signed by Elizabeth of Russia.

Since 1832, the theater has been located in a building designed by Carlo Rossi, in the centre of Nevsky Prospekt, in Saint Petersburg. The building was named the Alexandrinsky Theatre in honour of Alexandra Fedorovna, wife of Emperor Nicholas the First. Its other name is of course derived from the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

The building has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The premieres of numerous Russian plays have been performed at the stage of the Alexandrinsky, including plays by Alexandr Griboyedov, Alexandr Ostrovsky, and Anton Chekhov.

On August 30, 2006 the theatre reopened after reconstruction.
