Anthony John Melody (18 December 1922 - 26 June 2008) was a British television actor.

Early life

Melody was born in London but spent most of his early childhood near Leeds. After leaving school he served in the Royal Air Force.

Career

His acting career began in radio, appearing in the sitcom, "The Clitheroe Kid"; this was followed by the role of compère and singer with the BBC's Northern Dance Orchestra, in the 1950s radio show "The Straw Hat Club".

Over the years Melody had roles in many television programmes such as "Coronation Street", "Steptoe and Son", "Emmerdale", "Heartbeat" and "Last of The Summer Wine". He also appeared in the television drama "Shipman" in 2002.

In 1979 Melody appeared in the film "Yanks" opposite Richard Gere and Rachel Roberts.

Tony Melody spent much of his later life in Bispham, Blackpool where he died from cancer on 26 June 2008.
