Other well known songs written and performed by Tracey include "Nights Like These" and the live favourite "Battery Man".
Career
Raised in Kerry, a county steeped in music it was no wonder Tracey's talent was obvious from a young age. At just five she wrote her first song with the help of a friend. Her first band, Poetic Justice was a small teenage group, made up mostly of boys from her home town of
Tralee . She was 15 while she supplied backing vocals in the band which apparently dropped her at some point. A move which they later regretted.Dextris
While in Galway University Tracey joined Dextris, a group that consisted of two girls harmonising over house and hip-hop beats spun by a DJ. Initially Dextris performed in pubs and clubs in Galway with the two girls covering tracks such as "Runaway", "To Be In Love", "No No No" and "Sing It Back". It was something not being done anywhere else in Ireland at the time, an aspect that helped make Dextris well known on the Irish club scene. Eventually the group began to write their own material and Dextris' DJ, Cyril, produced the tracks. By 2002 their live sets were made up entirely of their own material, unfortunately that was as far as the group went and they disbanded that same year.
Fish Go Deep
Unfinished songs that never made it to the live sets of Dextris, too good to be forgotten, helped motivate Tracey to continue her career in music. At the time she already knew Fish Go Deep's DJs Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson through a friend and decided to propose a collaboration. The idea was openly welcomed and soon after Tracey visited FGD's studio where they began work on a track called "Lil' Hand" (later to emerge as the title track on their debut long-player). This first attempt to work with FGD did not go as well as hoped, according to Tracey "things weren't really gelling musically." It was decided to abandon their little project.
A year passed and on Tracey's birthday she came across Greg at The Shelter, a club he was playing at in Dublin. At the after-party in Tracey's place Greg heard a few tracks of her own creation from the previous few months, each of which did not fail to impress. This chance meeting inspired Tracey and FGD to work together again but as FGD's studio was being revamped at the time the plan was to send Tracey a track and she would look at turning it into a song, in a small Mac-based studio in her home. The result was "Nights Like These", which came out on the UK's Inspirit Music Label in 2003. This was to mark the beginning of a musical relationship loved by House music fans and music lovers alike. Following "Nights Like These", work on a début album was carried out and in 2004 "
Lil' Hand " was released on Canadian label, Ultrasound Recordings. The album from which the house anthem, "The Cure and The Cause" was born. The single's rise to fame was slow and it did not pinnacle until it was re-released later in 2006 where it reached No. 23 in the UK main Top 75 and No. 1 in the dance chart.Discography
