- Peter Cole
Peter Cole is an American poet who lives in
Jerusalem .Cole was named a
MacArthur Foundation Fellow in 2007. He is the recipient of the 2007 National Jewish Book Award in Poetry for "The Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain, 950-1492," which was also named the Book of the Year by the Association of American Publishers' Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division. His work has been awarded the PEN Translation Prize. Cole has received fellowships from the NEA, the NEH, and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.Cole's first two books of poems, "Rift" and "Hymns & Qualms" were reissued as "What is Doubled: Poems 1981-1988," and "Things on Which I've Stumbled" will be published by New Directions in the fall of 2008. He has translated works by Shmuel HaNagid, Solomon Ibn Gabirol, Taha Muhammad Ali, Aharon Shabtai, Yoel Hoffmann, Avraham Ben-Yitzhak and Harold Schimmel. Peter Cole is also one of the publishers and editors of Ibis Editions, a literary press based in Jerusalem that publishes English translations of Arabic, Hebrew, and literary work from other languages of the Levant.
