- Ponwar
The Ponwar (also Panwar, Puar, Powar, or Pawar) are an
Arya clan of that ruled the states ofChhatarpur ,Dewas ,Dhar , andRajgarh in centralIndia . They claimed the same descent as theParamara clan ofAryan s andKshatriya s, who ruledMalwa from the 9th to the 14th centuries. The state ofRajgarh was ruled by the Umat clan of Ponwar rulers and came into separate existence after the division of Umatwara in the16th century . The other half-of Umatwara was ruled by the sister state of Narsingarh. The Ponwar "Rawat"s, later "Raja"s, became tributaries ofSindhia in the 18th century. However, they alone are considered to be pure Pawar rulers in Malwa. The Maratha Peshwa Bajirao invaded
Malwa in1723 , and his armies were led by Maratha generals that includedUdaji Rao Ponwar ,Malhar Rao Holkar andRanoji Sindhia . Udaji Rao Ponwar established himself atDhar in Malwa in 1728, but in 1732 fell out of favor with the Peshwa and was imprisoned; his younger brother Anand Rao Ponwar became the Raja of Dhar, and his descendants ruled the state until Indian Independence. Two Ponwar brothers, Tukaji Rao (senior) and Jivaji Rao (junior), established themselves as rulers of
Dewas in 1728; their descendants divided the state in two, ruled by senior and junior branches of the family descended from the two brothers. The Ponwar rulers of Chhatarpur took control of the state in
1785 , and became aprincely state ofBritish India in1806 . The Ponwar Maharaja acceded to theGovernment of India on1 January 1950 .Ancient Heroes In This Clan
