unitary authority of theCity of York in the north ofEngland . It is situated by the River Ouse south ofNether Poppleton , and west ofYork . The village is served byPoppleton railway station on theHarrogate line .According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 1,961. Prior to 1996 it had been part of the Harrogate district.
The name is derived from "popel" (pebble) and "tun" (hamlet, farm), and probably means "farmstead on pebbly soil". Upper Poppleton used to be referred to as "Land Poppleton" whilst Nether Poppleton was called "Water Poppleton".
The village is mentioned in the
Domesday Book and belonged to theArchbishops of York . It became aConservation Area in 1993. Their football teamPoppleton United play in theYork Football League Division One.External links
