Simbad=bet+draBeta Draconis (Beta Dra / β Draconis / β Dra) is the third brightest
star in theconstellation of Draco. It has the traditional name Rastaban, which confusingly has also been used forGamma Draconis .pp. 207–208, [http://books.google.com/books?id=5xQuAAAAIAAJ "Star-names and Their Meanings"] , Richard Hinckley Allen, New York, London: G. E. Stechert, 1899.] [http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/~kaler/sow/rastaban.html Rastaban] , "Stars", Jim Kaler. Accessed on lineSeptember 17 ,2008 .]It is a G-type
supergiant star , with spectral class G2 and anapparent visual magnitude of approximately 2.79. Its distance from theSun is around 360light years . It is abinary star , with a binary star designation of ADS 10611, in which the supergiant is orbited by a dwarf companion once every fourmillennia or so.The traditional name, from the Arabic phrase "ra's ath-thu'ban" ("head of the serpent") is less commonly written Rastaben, and has also been used for the star
Gamma Draconis . Rastaban is also known as Asuia and Alwaid, the latter meaning "who is to be destroyed," though some trace it to Arabic "al'awwad" ("the lute player"). It is part of the asterism of theMother Camels (Arabic "al'awa'id"), which may have influenced this alternate name. The star has two visual companions, one, B, being the dwarf companion mentioned above.
