Princess Marie Auguste von Anhalt-Dessau (10 June 1898 in Ballenstedt – 22 May 1983 in Essen) was the daughter of Eduard, Duke of Anhalt and his wife Princess Luise of Saxe-Altenburg.
She married in Berlin on 11 March 1916 HRH Prince Joachim of Prussia, the youngest son of German Kaiser Wilhelm II. The couple had one son, Prince Karl Franz Josef Wilhelm Friedrich Eduard Paul (15 December 1916 in Potsdam – 22 January 1975 in Arica, Chile). Their grandson, Prince Franz Wilhelm, married the pretender of the Imperial Russian throne Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia.
After her father-in-law's abdication, her husband was unable to accept his new status as a commoner and fell into a deep depression, finally committing suicide by gunshot on 18 July 1920.
She married her second husband Johannes-Michael Freiherr von Loën in Berlin on 27 September 1926.
Princess Marie Auguste adopted in 1980 her friend's only son, Hans Robert Lichtenberg, who upon the adoption took the name of Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt which has led confusion in media reports that he is or not a member of a European royal family, which he is not. The family of Princess Marie Auguste has never recognized him as being part of their lineage nor is he entitled to any official royal title. Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt became famous in press by his marriage with actress Zsa Zsa Gabor.
