- Catalan earthquake of 1428
The Catalan
earthquake of2 February 1428 , known in Catalan as the "terratrèmol de la candelera" because it took place during theCandlemas , struck the region ofCatalonia , especiallyRoussillon , with anepicentre nearCamprodon . The quake was one of a series of such seismic events that shook Catalonia in a single year. Beginning on23 February 1427 , tremors were felt in March, April,15 May atOlot , [Joan Toralles described the Olot quake in a brief notice in his "Noticiari".] June, and December. These had caused relatively minor property damage, notably to themonastery of Amer ; but probably they had caused severe distressing to building infrastructure. This would account for the massive and widespread destruction that accompanied the 1428 temblor.Modern estimates peg the intensity as an eight (damaging) or nine (destructive) on the
Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik scale . [E. Banda and A. M. Correig (1984), "The Catalan earthquake of February 2, 1428", "Engineering Geology", 20:89–97.] Therampart s ofPrats-de-Mollo-la-Preste were destroyed. Theclocktower ofArles-sur-Tech collapsed. The monastery ofFontclara atBanyuls-dels-Aspres was devastated. The damage sustained bySaint-Martin-du-Canigou marked the commencement of its decline. Thebelltower andcimborio ofSant Joan de les Abadesses fell down. Thechapel at Núria was destroyed. The entire villages ofTortellà andQueralbs were destroyed. Among the partially damaged structures wereSanta Maria de Ripoll andSant Llorenç prop Bagà . As far away asPerpignan andBarcelona the populace was gripped by panic. In the latter the intensity was estimated at six (strong) or seven (very strong). Therose window of the Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar was destroyed.Robin de Molhet , lord ofPeyrepertuse , who was travelling in his domains when the earthquake struck, quickly came to the aid of victims, which earned the recognition ofAlfonso V of Aragon , who was away in Valencia at the time of the tremors. He was informed by the President of theGeneralitat de Catalunya ,Felip de Malla , in a letter. [The letter can still be read inJosep Perarnau i Espelt (2002), [http://dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/articulo?codigo=2219787 "La lletra de Felip de Malla informant el rei Alfons del terratrèmol de la Candelera, 1428"] , "Arxiu de textos catalans antics", 21:665–670.] An estimated hundreds of people were killed in the disaster: two hundred are estimated at Camprodon, one to three hundred atPuigcerdà (due to the collapse of the church), twenty to thirty at Barcelona (in Santa Maria del Mar), and almost the entire population of Queralbs. The fallout lasted well over a year. The quake was probably the worst in the history of thePyrenees ,Fact|date=July 2008 though the first recorded only occurred in 1373. It remains to this day a point of reference for the study of seismic risk.Notes
