Edward Dunglass was a fictional character in the Australian soap opera "Home and Away". He was a regular on the show from 1999 to 2000.

Character's background

One of the more uncoventional residents of Summer Bay, Edward was first seen standing on the beach by the rest of the local teenagers.His unusual goth appearance prompted some sarcastic comments from Will Smith but he gave as good as he got and probably won on points.Not long after he rescued Duncan Stewart from a group of bullies and as such earned an invite to join the rest of the teens at the caravan park for their go kart trials.Just as Edward had stunned everyone by getting the best time, they were interrupted by their new school principal, Judith Ackroyd...and Edward stunned everyone still further by revealing she was his mother.

When Don Fisher heard Edward's name, he was shocked since it was the name of one of his old English tutors.In fact, as was quickly revealed, Edward was the son of the elder Edward Dunglass, a married man that Judith had had an affair with.Furthermore, Edward Snr had died from Huntington's Disease and Edward was fully aware that he may well have inherited it from him.

Despite being a loner, Edward soon hooked up with Peta Janossi and began to be accepted by the rest of his peers, becoming good friends with Will and Mitch McColl.When Edward learned that Peta regretted not being able to grieve for her grandmother, who had died overseas, he took her to the cemetery and persuaded her to use the grave of a lady of a similar age as a substitute.Even being interrupted by Colleen Smart didn't dull the effect too much. Edward was amused by rumours that Judith was having an affair with Don and didn't do anything to dissuade them until he realised Judith was upset by them and took Gypsy Nash, who was mainly responsible for the gossip, to task.Still, he hadn't lost his mischievous streak, letting a group of students from Yabbee Creek into the school dance purely for entertainment value.

Since their first meeting, Duncan had adopted Edward as his role model, much to the horror of his parents Alf and Ailsa.Edward wasn't backward in giving controversial opinions-when Don's infant son Byron died, Edward told Duncan it was better than living with an illness.Alf was furious when he found out and Edward was just as furious when Don told Alf about his illness.He was soon back to making himself unpopular by showing sympathy for the African rebels who had taken Duncan's aunt Celia hostage but at least knew where to draw the line-when he found out Duncan was hiding a Chinese illegal immigrant, Liang, he told the authorities, mainly because the immigrants were carriers of typhoid.

Edward still had a passion for thrill seeking because of the possibility his time was short and when Will told him about Jump Rock, which teens regularly jumped from into the scene to prove themselves, he was keen to give it a try.Peta made several attempts to talk him out of it but failed and afterwards told him they would have to break up if he couldn't promise not to do it again.By this stage, Don had become something of a mentor to Edward and persuaded him not to cut himself off from people.The incident resulted in Peta's friend Hayley Smith and some of the other Bay youngsters finding out Edward might have Huntington's, a state of affairs he eventually accepted.

Edward was touched when Don gave him a book containing notes from one of his father's lectures, since Edward had no personal memories of his father.Soon after, the book was stolen by some hoons who tried to throw it in the water.Edward offered to let them throw Peta in instead, which didn't exactly please her.She ended up signing them both up for self-defence classes, despite Edward having little interest in such machismo.He was partly proved right when Shauna Bradley and Harry Reynolds effectively came to blows during the demonstration.Afterwards, he convinced Peta that it was good for girls to learn to defend themselves but for him to learn violence just prolonged male stereotypes.

Edward and Peta clashed again when they both ran for the post of school editor, breaking up for a time.Edward also found himself in the odd position of giving Mitch relationship advice...which resulted in him temporarily breaking up with Hayley.By now, Edward appeared to be showing early symptoms of Huntingdon's, such as muscle spasms and temporary paralysis.Wanting to experience everything, he made an attempt to seduce Peta which largely consisted of unbuttoning her blouse without her noticing just before her foster father Joel Nash walked in.He then suggested they get "married" and after a private ceremony on her porch they finally consummated their relationship.

Considering the marriage valid, at least to them, Edward wanted to move in with Peta.Neither Judith nor Joel was entirely happy about the idea but Judith eventually agreed to let Peta move in with them. Edward meanwhile started to match make between Judith and Don and was somewhat bewildered when Peta's efforts to hook Judith up with Joel proved more successful.

When Edward turned eighteen, he was finally able to have the test for Huntington's.To no-one's surprise, it came back positive and Edward acted as though it wasn't a big deal...before breaking down in front of Peta and Mitch.Judith gave him a video message his father had recorded for such an eventuality and although he was initially angry she hadn't given it to him before he eventually calmed down.

However, Edward had decided to live whatever time he had left to the full.He started by abandoning his goth appearance, saying he didn't need to hide any longer, then dropped out of school.He asked Judith to give him the trust fund to set up for university so he and Peta could go travelling and once again she gave in, arranging for them to stay with her sister in Rome as a first stop.

As the day of their departure approached, Edward's symptoms caused him to become tired and irritable and he worried Peta wouldn't want to stay with him.She assured him that wasn't the case and after their friends wished them well they left the Bay.When Will visited the pair the following year, he confirmed Edward was getting ill.

In 2000, Edward was given between five and twelve years to live.His current status is unknown.
