- SPOT Satellite Messenger
The SPOT Satellite Messenger is a portable GPS and satellite communication device designed to be carried into remote locations where the user may require emergency assistance. It is manufactured by Axonn LLCcite web | url=http://www.axonn.com/development.html | title=Axonn: Global Data Solutions | accessdate=2008-07-03] and marketed by SPOT Inc., a subsidiary of Globalstar Inc.cite web | url=http://www.findmespot.ca/en/newsroom/index.php?cid=302 | title=Company Background | accessdate=2008-07-03]
How it works
To determine its location, the SPOT device has a built-in GPS chip and antenna. The Globalstar satellite network is then used for one-way transmission of all messages including location. The device can, in theory, work anywhere in the world the device has a line-of-sight to a Globalstar satellite. In practice, reviewers have found this to be largely true. However, placing the device in a pocket, vehicle, under tree cover, or among tall buildings may prevent a message from being received.cite web | url=http://www.gpsmagazine.com/2008/01/spot_satellite_messenger_perso.php | title=SPOT Satellite Messenger Personal Tracker Review | publisher=GPS Magazine | accessdate=2008-07-03 | date=January 2008] cite web | url=http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9839898-1.html | title=The Gizmo Report: the SPOT Satellite Messenger | publisher=CNET Crave | accessdate=2008-07-03 | date=January 2008] The device will repeat transmission of its emergency messages at predefined interval until the user cancels the emergency, turns off the device, or until the batteries run out. SPOT's transmission ability is one-way only so the device is unable to give the user confirmation that a message was successfully sent.
