The school was formerly a part of Eastern Goldfields Senior High School, but the school split in 2001 onto two campuses, the original on boomerang crescent became a junior High School with classes for year's 8-10 whereas the senior students were moved to the local Curtin university campus and the students benefeited from the high quality university facilities that were made available to them, particularly in the areas of trade and hospitality. The name of the school and its pegasus logo were made official in 2006.

In living memory Eastern Goldfields has never won an A grade competition. Many students criticise the lack of a school run sporting program as many south-west schools have (such as Australind)

Eastern Goldfields has also competed in rugby union games against rival high school John Paul College (Kalgoorlie), this competition began in 2006, and is held annually with both the Yr 11 and 12's and the year 8-10's representing their own 15 man squads. The rugby union competition is bitterly competitive and since its creation has been a frequent staging ground for fights and brawls.Eastern Goldfields has beaten JPC in every match so far.

Frequent attempts have been made at instigating inter-school cricket and football competitions between the two high schools but none of the competitions enjoyed much longevity.
