footnotes= General Paciano Rizal (full name: Paciano Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda) (March 7 ,1851 –April 13 ,1930 ) was a Filipino general, and the older brother of Dr. José Rizal, the national hero of thePhilippines .Rizal was the second of eleven children born to a
middle-class family in the town ofCalamba ,Laguna , and grew up witnessing the suffering of his countrymen under the Spanish colonial government. Father José Burgos, a close friend of Rizal, was implicated in theCavite Mutiny of 1872 and summarily executed. Paciano Rizal joined and actively supported the campaign for reforms, started byMarcelo H. del Pilar and his newspaper, "Diariong Tagalog". He also helped spread theKatipunan in Laguna. In January of 1897, after his brother’s execution, Rizal joined General Emilio Aguinaldo inCavite . He was appointed brigadier general of the revolutionary forces, and was elected Secretary of Finance in the Departmental Government of Central Luzon. During thePhilippine-American War (1899-1913), he commanded the Filipino forces in Laguna. U.S. troops captured him in 1900. [Citation
