Anglo-American School of Moscow

Anglo-American School of Moscow

The Anglo-American School of Moscow in Moscow, Russia, is an independent, not-for-profit, co-educational, international day school catering for students aged between the ages of 4 and 18, chartered by the American, British and Canadian embassies. The Anglo American School (AAS) was founded in 1949, originally for the children of the chartering embassies. It moved to a brand new purpose built campus in a wooded location in north west Moscow in 2000, and now has over 1250 students from over 60 nationalities. Further improvements since 2000 have seen the addition of a 630 seat theater, a swimming pool, an all-weather sports pitch, and additional classrooms.

The school is organized into three divisions, Elementary School (PreK-grade 5), the Middle School (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12). Each division has a Principal, the whole school operating under the aegis of a Director and a Board of Trustees. The Director is Drew Alexander, who has been head of the school since 2003. Class sizes are typically 16- 18 students.

The high school offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), and also a college-preparatory program leading to a High School Diploma. The elementary school offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP). The School is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Council of International Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization. First priority on admission is given to the children of American, British and Canadian diplomats, second priority is given to children whose parents work for a company or organization that has reserved seats. Any remaining places are available to any child who meets the general admission requirements, while limiting to 15% the number of students from any one country except the US, UK and Canada. The school is currently heavily oversubscribed, but welcomes admissions inquiries.

According to the "Good Schools Guide International", the Anglo-American school is "The biggest and longest established school for English-speaking expats in Moscow and the most expensive." [http://gsgi.co.uk/countries/russia/moscow/moscow-schools-considered-by-expats]

Financial Costs

The school is a not-for-profit organization, totally funded from school fees apart from a very small US State Department grant. There are no financial contributions from the chartering embassies.

Fees differ per age group, but average at $25,000 per year, and are not only the lowest in Moscow for international education, but better or comparable to similar schools in capital cities throughout the world.

All activities in the school, including capital building programs, are completely self-funded.

Noticable Pupils of the school

Andrey Efimov (10th Grade), the great grandson of Boris Efimov goes to this school, as does the son of a owner of casinos in Moscow, Nikita Sadov (grade 10), best known for being a fat churka. Also a designer Kira Plastinina (11th Grade). Kacper Batty is the worst known student to ever go to this school.
