GrantRail

GrantRail

GrantRail is an Anglo-Dutch company based in Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England who specialise in Railway Engineering owned jointly by Corus and Volker Wessels. They have a long history of Railway Engineering, having started off as a British Steel subsidury Grant Lyon Eagre Ltd before becoming GrantRail in September 1996. The company has several divisions which specialise in various aspects of railway work including signalling, permanent way, electrification, large plant and high voltage power supplies.

Although they are not a large company they have made significant contributions to the Rail industry both on the UK national network and many private and industrial networks. Until last year GrantRail were one of the main renewals contractors with Network Rail.

The company are currently involved with work in Stratford in London in connection with transport links for the 2012 Olympics and are coming towards the end of upgrading the Hull Docks Branch on the old Hull and Barnsley Railway to nearly treble the line capacity. Manchester Airport Station's new third platform has seen a significant contribution from GrantRail.

Recent years have seen them working on an increasing number of Light Rail projects across the UK and Ireland, including Manchester, Nottingham and Dublin. Work is due to commence on the MAnchester Metro Phase 3a later this year and GrantRail will be in charge of all the P-Way works.

National tamping contract

GrantRail's involvement with Network Rail's National Tamping Contract (NTC) is perhaps one of the most visible of GrantRail's operations. They are unusual as they chose to have Matisa tampers at a time when most UK companies were using Plasser machines almost exclusively. They have two types of mainline tamper, Matisa B45 tampers and Matisa B41 UE tampers as well as two Matisa R24 S ballast regulators.

The Matisa tampers are also considered unusual because they only have a single tamping head—in Europe tamping two or three bays is common, however in the UK the infrastructure does not always allow this so the single tamping head is still very useful and efficient and easy to maintain.

Kirow cranes

GrantRail have also become known for their fleet of Kirow cranes. They have three sizes of these cranes are can be seen in use all over the UK.
