Altus Network Solutions, Inc. was founded in 1997 to offer high-level consulting services for Microsoft and Cisco products. nFront Security was established in June 2007 to carry forward the sales and marketing efforts for nFront Password Filter (formerly Passfilt Pro).
In 1998, Altus provided a free utility called SPCheck to the security community. SPCheck was the first utility of its kind to test network machines for Microsoft service packs and security patches. The source code of the utility was shared with someone outside of Altus who renamed the utility SPQuery and moved forward with commercial sales of the product, eventually selling it to St. Bernard software. St. Bernard branded the product as Update Expert and it became one of the best known utilities for monitoring and deploying Microsoft patches.
In 2003, Altus released Passfilt Pro, a utility to enhance and enforce better password policies on Windows. The software was an immediate success and attracted the business of military and commercial organizations worldwide. In June 2007, Altus created a new division to handle a line of security software products. The new division is named nFront Security. In August 2007, the product name was changed to nFront Password Filter to move forward with branding under the nFront Security division.
