As an actor, Enrique has worked with such notable directors as Tony Scott, (Déjà Vu) Taylor Hackford, (Blood In-Blood Out) Stephen Frears (The Hi-Lo Country) Wim Wenders (The End of Violence) Gregory Nava (My Family-El Norte) Oliver Stone (Nixon) and Tim Burton (Mars Attacks). On stage he has played numerous lead roles. With the world-renown theater company El Teatro Campesino Enrique played the lead role opposite Edward James Olmos in the Center Theater Group/El Teatro Campesino’s critically acclaimed production Zoot Suit.
Early Theater Experience
As a founding member of The Latino Theater Company, Enrique was one of the lead actors in a variety of the company’s productions. He was also one of the writers on the company’s play Stone Wedding and one of two principal writers on the multi-award-winning play August 29. In addition to the plays, Enrique also wrote and directed The History of The Latino Theater Company, a documentary chronicling the highlights of the theater company and was one of the producers of the company’s annual comedy fundraiser Noche de Risa y Susto.
In 1997 Enrique created Four Brown Hats Entertainment (FBHE), a film and theater production company. Under this banner Enrique honed his directing skills.
With FBHE, Enrique adapted and directed the award-winning play The Last Angry Brown Hat, touring the production across the country to rave reviews for over four years. Following the success of The Last Angry Brown Hat, he wrote and directed Veteranos: A Legacy of Valor, a theater piece honoring the military contributions by Latinos in America’s defense. Under Enrique’s direction, Veteranos went on to play to standing ovations and much critical acclaim on two national tours. It received universal support from all military branches and veterans groups in every city it played. In 2003 Veteranos was awarded a special recognition by the Hispanic Congressional Caucus at a special reception held in Washington D.C. Later that year, Veteranos was honored to receive the prestigious Imagen Award for Best Live Theatrical Production in Los Angeles, CA.
Writing career
As a screenwriter, Enrique has been focusing his attention on writing stories that reflect the American-Latino experience. Among his completed feature film scripts are Yo Solo (I Alone), The Cobra, Valley of The Dead, Deerdancer and the screen version of The Last Angry Brown Hat. Independent production companies have already optioned two of Enrique’s scripts. Valley of The Dead, a crime suspense thriller has been optioned by Concrete Images and Deerdancer, set in the world of Mexican folk dance, is in the development stages at Border Crossing Films.
Enrique will be starring in Devil’s Highway in 2006. Devil’s Highway is the tragic true story of thirteen Mexicano migrants who perished in the Arizona desert in 2001. Currently, Enrique is attached to make his feature film directorial debut on Pushing Thirty, an urban buddy film about three high school friends on the verge of turning thirty, by Tom Flores. Enrique is also currently developing The Last Angry Brown Hat, which he will also direct.
