Shortly before taking his life, Ludwig Rudolph called his eldest brother Prince Ernst August to ensure that he would care for Otto Heinrich after his death. Otto was nine months old at the time of his parents' deaths.Despite Ernst August's promise to take custody of Otto Heinrich and raise him with his sons Ernst August VI and Christian, an Austrian court awarded custody to the prince's maternal grandparents, the Count and Countess of Thurn and Valsassina-Como-Vercelli.
