He was educated at King Edward VII School (Sheffield), followed by Keble College, Oxford, where he was awarded an MA and DPhil (in 1978),[3] and Westcott House and Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he read Theology. Ordained in 1982 he began his career with a Curacy at Maltby and was then successively Vicar of Banbury,[5] Rector of Cockermouth and finally (before ascending to the Episcopate)[4] Archdeacon of Carlisle.[6]
Bishop David was consecrated as bishop in St Paul's Cathedral on 3 July 2008 and installed as Bishop of Huntingdon in Ely Cathedral on 17 October 2008.[2]
A respected medieval historian, he is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Royal Historical Society as well as an FRSA; his academic works include “A Descriptive Catalogue of Middle English Grammatical Texts”, 1979 and “An Edition of the Middle English Grammatical Texts”, 1984—,[7] and his latest work has been on the Bewcastle Cross. He has also published a series of devotional books, "A Journey with John", "Lent with Luke", "Christmas by Candelight" and "Ways to Pray".
He is married with two sons and two daughters,[3] and his interests include detective fiction, crosswords, gardening, photography and fine art.
