April showers (weather phenomenon)
- April showers (weather phenomenon)
April showers is a term that denotes spring rains in some parts of the northern hemisphere, in particular the UK, during the Gregorian or Julian month of April. One of the major reasons for the, often, very heavy showers and downpours that characterise April is the position of the jet stream [citation|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/features/understanding/april_showers.shtml |year=2008 |publisher=BBC Weather centre |accessdate=2008-06-25 |title=April Showers] . In early spring the jet stream starts to move northwards allowing large depressions to bring strong winds and rain in from the Atlantic and in one day the weather can change from springtime sunshine to winter sleet and snow. The track of these depressions can often be across Ireland and Scotland bringing bands of rain followed by heavy showers (often of hail or snow) and strong blustery winds. So in one day the weather can change from springtime sunshine to winter sleet and snow.]References
