Sherman is a town in Lee, Pontotoc, and Union Counties in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The population was 548 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Sherman is located at coor dms|34|21|38|N|88|50|19|W|city (34.360659, -88.838734)GR|1. Most of the town is in Pontotoc County with a portion extending north into Union County and a tiny portion extending east into Lee County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.8 km²).None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 548 people, 241 households, and 153 families residing in the town. The population density was 293.6 people per square mile (113.1/km²). There were 263 housing units at an average density of 140.9/sq mi (54.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 83.39% White, 16.06% African American, 0.36% Native American, and 0.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.36% of the population.

There were 241 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 83.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $21,667, and the median income for a family was $29,844. Males had a median income of $29,038 versus $18,958 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,301. About 20.4% of families and 20.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.0% of those under age 18 and 22.7% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The Town of Sherman is served by three school districts. Most of the town is served by the Pontotoc County School District, while the Union County portion is served by the Union County School District. The Lee County School District serves the small portion of Sherman that lies in Lee County.
