Personal
Passmore grew up in Wynnum-Manly, Brisbane.
In the early 1990s, he served in the army, and then did a variety of jobs, including factory work, before eventually moving to Sydney to attend the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1999. He graduated in 2001.
Passmore married his wife Jacqui in 1997.
Soon after leaving his eight-year marriage to PR guru Jacqui Passmore in 2006, Matt met girlfriend Rachael Carpani on set when he returned to play Marcus, Alex's brother, in McLeod's Daughters. They split in 2011.
Passmore has an older brother and younger sister and many cousins.

Television
Passmore began his career on the children's television series Play School. Later on, he took on a variety of roles on Australian television shows such as Always Greener, Blue Heelers, The Cooks, Last Man Standing, McLeod's Daughters, and Underbelly: Tale of Two Cities.

- 2006–2009 Returns to McLeod's Daughters, this time as Marcus, Alex's half-brother;
- 2008 Passmore also played the leading role of private detective Reilly in the 2008 Australian film noir short film Noir Drive;
- 2009 Plays Warwick Mobbs on Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities; Plays John Wood's son in the ABC series The Cut. Heads to LA where he scores the lead on the pilot Masterwork by Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring. It goes nowhere, but A&E Network target him for The Glades;
- 2010 Filming commences on Season 1 of The Glades;
- 2011 Filming commences on Season 2 of The Glades.
