Quinlan placed 1st in the Junior Class and 4th in the Men's Open
Light-Heavyweight Division at the 1998 NABF Tri-State Pro-Am. He swept the Junior Class and earned a 3rd place finish in the Men's Open Light-Heavyweight Division two weeks later at the NABF USA Junior Nationals. Later that same year at the NABFBodybuilding Pro-Am America Nationals inProvidence, Rhode Island Quinlan finished 2nd Overall in the Junior Class. In February 1999, Quinlan entered the
Killer Kowalski Professional Wrestling School where he trained along withApril Hunter andAaron Stevens under the names Joseph Bagwell [ [http://100megsfree4.com/wiawrestling/pages/other/indyres01.htm Professional Wrestling Information Archive] ] and Alex Bagwell [ [http://www.bostonphoenix.com/archive/features/00/08/03/WRESTLING.html Killer Kowalski Professional Wrestling School Boston Phoenix Feature] ] which were assigned to him by promoters. In the Fall of 2000, Quinlan was in contact withJoey Styles ofExtreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) for a scheduled professional tryout which never materialized. Early in 2001 he had a brief feud withRick Fuller , formally ofWorld Championship Wrestling (WCW), while wrestling for NWA-NE over a title shot against Fuller that ended in a loss. Shortly after, with his manager Peter Karalekas, Quinlan went toAtlanta, Georgia and met withErnest Miller about entering theWCW Power Plant which unfortunately closed during this time. He began training with Ed Leslie, who is best known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) legendBrutus "The Barber" Beefcake , in the summer of 2001. It was during this time that Quinlan's future looked bright with theX Wrestling Federation (XWF) under the name Shane O'Kane, but it fell through for financial reasons.
