- 5th Arkansas Infantry
The 5th Arkansas Infantry, also called the Fighting Fifth (
1861 -1865 ) was aConfederate Army infantry regiment organized inArkansas to serve for theConfederate States of America during theAmerican Civil War .The regiment was first formed in
Greene County, Arkansas , and was immediately transferred for service toCorinth, Mississippi . Initially organized to serve for only one year, they would spend the duration of the war in the service of the Confederate Army, fighting in the western theater. The regiment was commanded byColonel John E. Murray, and would take part in theBattle of Pea Ridge , theSecond Battle of Corinth , theBattle of Chickamauga , theBattle of Shiloh , theAtlanta Campaign , theSiege of Chattanooga , theBattle of Richmond , the second Battle of Franklin, and their finalBattle of Bentonville . They would also take part in numerous smallskirmish es. Col. Murray waskilled in action during the Atlanta Campaign, andCaptain William T. Jones would be awarded theConfederate Medal of Honor for valor during that same campaign. The regiment suffered heavy casualties over the course of the war, and mustered out shortly after the surrender of theArmy of Northern Virginia in 1865.External links
