Arkansas Civil War Confederate Units

Arkansas Civil War Confederate Units

Arkansas Civil War Confederate Units, a list of units formed from that state for service in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Most of the Arkansas regiments fought almost completely in what was considered "the west" during the war. Of those, the most active was the 1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles, 1st Arkansas Infantry, the 4th Arkansas Infantry, 5th Arkansas Infantry, and the 6th Arkansas, all five of whom saw considerable action while attached to General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee. Only one, the 3rd Arkansas, fought in the east for the duration of the war, having been attached to General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Thus, that regiment took part in almost every major eastern battle and campaign, making it the states most celebrated regiment, and with that regiment having suffered heavy casualties by the wars end. Portions of both the 1st and 2nd Arkansas Infantry regiments were later augmented to the 3rd Arkansas when their regiments were disbanded. Of the 1,353 soldiers mustered into the 3rd Arkansas from the start of the war, only 144 remained at the time of Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9th, 1865.
