John A. Tvedtnes

John A. Tvedtnes (born January 26th, 1941) is a retired Mormon apologist who worked as a scholar with the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at Brigham Young University. He holds an M.A. in Linguistics and Middle East Studies.

Biography

Tvedtnes was born in Mandan, North Dakota to Roman Catholics parents. He converted to Mormonism at the age of nine when his family moved to Salt Lake City. Tvedtnes served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France and Switzerland. Tvedtnes and his wife Carol have six children. They currently live in Bella Vista, Arkansas.

Academic and Apologetic Career

Tvedtnes received both his bachelors and his masters degrees at the University of Utah. From 1971-1979 Tvednes was living in Israel while studying at Hebrew University. He also studied Arabic and linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley. Tvednes is a member of the World Union of Jewish Studies.

He is perhaps best known as a Mormon apologist and has published many works defending Mormonism as part of FARMS, though he has done other work during his academic career.

Criticism

Tvedtnes published an article titled "Isaiah Variants in the Book of Mormon" [cite book|author=Tvedtnes, John A.|title=Isaiah and the Prophets: Inspired Voices from the Old Testament|editor=Monte S. Nyman|chapter=Isaiah Variants in the Book of Mormon|pages=165–177|year=1984|publisher=BYU Religious Studies Center|location=Provo, Utah|url=http://farms.byu.edu/publications/transcripts/?id=2|accessdate=2008-08-29] in which he advocated that biblical passages in the Book of Mormon were more accurate translations to the original Hebrew than the King James Version of the Bible. His work came under considerable criticism by other scholars who noted that it was "weak" and "illusory" ["Isaiah in the Book of Mormon...and Joseph Smith in Isaiah", David P. Wright in "American Apocrypha: Essays on the Book of Mormon." Dan Vogel and Brent Metcalfe, eds. (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 2002), pp. 157-234.
