The Battle of Exeter occurred in 1068 when
William the Conqueror marched a combined army of Anglo-Normans west to mop up pockets ofSaxon resistance. The Saxons ofDevon ,Somerset andDorset rallied atExeter in support of the remnants of the Godwin family. The Cornish declined to assist the Saxons at Exeter and in a simultaneous uprising the Welsh stormedShrewsbury , whilst the Cornish attacked the Saxon stronghold of Exeter from the west.
