- Joel Futterman
Joel Futterman (b. April 30, 1946,
Chicago ) is an Americanjazz pianist.Futterman played jazz professionally from his early teens, including with
Roland Kirk ,Clarence Shaw , andJimmy Garrison . He played with artists affiliated with theAACM , but eventually decided to leave Chicago, moving toVirginia Beach in 1973. In the 1980s he released several albums of material on his own label, JDF, and worked withRobert Adkins andJimmy Lyons . After Lyons's death in 1986, Futterman quit working professionally for a time; some of their performances together were reissued in the 1990s.Futterman eventually returned to active performance, spurred on by
Philip Egert , who aided him in finding record labels for releases. Some of his older material was reissued onEar-Rational andBellaphon Records around this time. He recorded two albums withRaphe Malik in the early 1990s, and worked withKidd Jordan andAlvin Fielder in addition to releasing his own material onSilkheart Records and elsewhere.Discography
