Joel Futterman

Joel Futterman

Joel Futterman (b. April 30, 1946, Chicago) is an American jazz pianist.

Futterman played jazz professionally from his early teens, including with Roland Kirk, Clarence Shaw, and Jimmy Garrison. He played with artists affiliated with the AACM, but eventually decided to leave Chicago, moving to Virginia Beach in 1973. In the 1980s he released several albums of material on his own label, JDF, and worked with Robert Adkins and Jimmy Lyons. After Lyons's death in 1986, Futterman quit working professionally for a time; some of their performances together were reissued in the 1990s.

Futterman eventually returned to active performance, spurred on by Philip Egert, who aided him in finding record labels for releases. Some of his older material was reissued on Ear-Rational and Bellaphon Records around this time. He recorded two albums with Raphe Malik in the early 1990s, and worked with Kidd Jordan and Alvin Fielder in addition to releasing his own material on Silkheart Records and elsewhere.
