26th Battalion (Australia)

On 16 June 1939 the 26th Australian Infantry Battalion (AIF) was formed by unlinking the 15/26th Battalion which was raised in Queensland near Brisbane, Australia. The new battalion, the 26th, enlisted its personnel from the following areas of northern Queensland: Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek, Cloncurry, Mt Isa, Winton, Longreach, Boulia, McKinlay, Barcaldine, Alpha, Jericho, Blackall, Isisford, Jundah, Muttaburra, Aramac, Stonehenge, Clermont and Emerald. Reinforcements from other Australian states arrived during 1942 and early 1943.

The 26th Battalion first saw active service when "A Company" became part of the Merauke Force in May 1943. Later, during December 1944, the battalion relieved the American forces in Torokina, Bougainville Island, New Guinea and when hostilities ceased the unit was sent to Rabaul for garrison duty in September 1945. The 26th Battalion was disbanded at Rabaul on 28 August 1946.
