Peter Štih (born 27 November 1960) is a
Slovenia nhistorian , specialising inmedieval history .Štih was born in
Ljubljana , but spent most of his childhood years in the town ofMost na Soči in theGoriška region of western Slovenia. He attended grammar school inTolmin and studied history at theUniversity of Ljubljana , where he graduated in 1983. In 1993 he obtained his PhD under the supervision of the historianBogo Grafenauer . Between 1992 and 1994 he was assistant researcher at the "Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung" (Institute for Austrian History) - part of theUniversity of Vienna .Štih teaches medieval history of the
Slovene Lands and theBalkans at the University of Ljubljana. He also teaches at theUniversity of Maribor . Since 2007 he is a member of theSlovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts . He is also member of theAustrian Academy of Sciences .He is the author of several publications on the medieval
history of Slovenia . His principal research fields include the ethnogenesis of Slovenes following theSlavic settlement of the Eastern Alps , early medieval state forms in the Eastern Alps (Carantania , Carniola), the history of nobility, and the emergence of Slovene Lands. He has also published a number of treatises ondiplomatics . As of 2000 he is the main editor of "Zgodovinski časopis / Historical Review", a principal Slovenian historic periodical.On the introduction of the
euro in Slovenia, Štih was among those who, on academic grounds, opposed the use of the Prince's Stone on the 2-cent coin.Major works
