It has a population of over 100,000. The town is a regional capital and an important trading centre, particularly for cocoa. During the Côte d'Ivoire Civil War, it has been regularly contested, and it was allegedly the site of a massacre by government troops in October 2002.[2]

The city is home to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Daloa, with its cathedral at Cathédrale du Christ-Roi.
