Alan Stout ".Alan Burrage Stout (b. Baltimore,Maryland ,November 26 ,1932 ) is an American composer ofcontemporary classical music .He studied at
Johns Hopkins University (B.S., 1954) and at thePeabody Conservatory . His instructors includedHenry Cowell ,Wallingford Riegger ,John Verrall , andVagn Holmboe , the latter at theUniversity of Copenhagen inDenmark for a year. He then studied at theUniversity of Washington , obtaining a M.A. in 1959.He taught at
Northwestern University beginning in 1962. His notable students includeJoseph Schwantner ,Augusta Read Thomas ,Jared Spears ,Marilyn Shrude ,Maggi Payne ,David Evan Thomas ,Michael Twomey ,Justinian Tamusuza ,Frank Ferko , andReginald Bain .His style is modernist, incorporating elements of
12-tone music as well as experimental styles. His music has been performed by theChicago Symphony Orchestra ,Philadelphia Orchestra , andBaltimore Symphony Orchestra .He lives in
