The Edmund Fitzgerald (formerly known as Elizabeth) were a math rock band from Oxford, England, who disbanded in 2005. Their final line-up consisted of Yannis Philipakkis on lead guitar and vocals, Lina Simon on rhythm guitar and Jack Bevan on drums. Yannis and Jack later went on to form
Foals.
Overview and History
The band is known for their live shows that featured intense epic songs with minimal vocals and disjointed, technical rhythms. [ [http://www.bbc.co.uk/oxford/blast/edmund_f.shtml BBC - Oxford Blast - The Edmund Fitzgerald ] ] Influences included Sweep the Leg Johnny and Sonic Youth. However, other influences were so numerous and varied that the group drew from the ideas of other bands rather than their finished product. The band split in 2005, following the departure of Lina, who chose not to pursue a musical career. [ [http://www.diskant.net/talentspotter/foals/ diskant.net » Foals ] ] They also claimed that things had become "too serious" and that they wanted to have more fun making music. [ [http://www.virginradio.co.uk/music/artists/foals/biography/ Foals - Biography - Virgin Radio ] ] This new desire resulted in the formation of Foals.
Discography
A 2CD album entitled 'Complete Works of The Edmund Fitzgerald' is said to be being released during late 2008 by Try Harder Records [ [http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=7323434411&topic=3844 The Edmund Fitzgerald Collected Works | Facebook ] ]
