In 1838, Nathan Hedges opened a high school in a building on Bank Street. On
January 7 ,1853 , a three-story building was opened at the corner of Washington and Linden and had an enrollment of 498 boys and girls. [http://www.barringeralumni.com/history_of_barringer_high_school.htm History of Barringer High School] , Barringer High School. AccessedDecember 26 ,2006 .]In 1875, Dr. William N. Barringer was hired to succeed Mr. George B. Sears as Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Barringer oversaw the construction of a second high school building at a cost of $300,000, which is now the faculty parking lot. Construction started in 1878 and was completed in 1899. In 1907, the name of Newark High School was officially changed to Barringer, in honor of Dr. Barringer.
Baltimore City College and BHS
If one dates Barringer to the 1838 founding of the school by Nathan Hedges, then Barringer would be the third oldest public high school in the United States. Others maintain that while Nathan Hedges opened his doors to students in 1838, Newark's first High School was not chartered until 1855 and that Barringer High School was not chartered until 1899. Baltimore City College , founded in 1839, would be the nation's third-oldest high school.Administration

Alma Mater
"Our Alma Mater" (written before the school's name was changed to Barringer High School)
::Over many a city old,::Famed in song and story::Temple gray and castle hold::Catch the sunset glory.::So our Alma Mater Proud::Looks o'er vale and meadow,::High between the sailing cloud::And its drifting shadow.
::For her colors, first the Blue::Of the April valley,::Then December's wintry hue::When the storm winds rally.::Newark High thy fame will raise,::Many voices blending,::Through the years we pledge thee praise::Loyal to life's ending.
