Originally a Junior High School, the school was established on 1900-09-11 [cite web|url=http://www.tosei-e.asn.ed.jp/~h/100kousha/enkaku.htm|title=沿革|language=Japanese|publisher=Aomori Prefectural Aomori High School|accessdate=2008-07-21] , on the site of a former military camp where the Hakkōda disaster took place which killed 199 out of 210 soldiers in the winter of 1902.
