refnum=80001342cite web|url=http://www.nr.nps.gov/|title=National Register Information System|date=2008-04-15|work=National Register of Historic Places|publisher=National Park Service]AVR 661 is a
Registered Historic Place that is or was located in Calumet Harbor, inChicago, Illinois . It was constructed in, or is otherwise associated with, the year 1943. According to the National Register Information System, it has "Historic function: defense" and "Historic subfunction: naval facility".It may be a kind of ship. An AVR as a convert|63|ft|m|sing=on ship is mentioned and portrayed [http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/radioplane_navy.html here] .
There is blog mention of AVR 661 being a ship, and that it was eventually used in target practice:"At least they were on AVR-661 ( the designation of the Boat when the Chicago Division Sea Cadets were finally able to "rescue" the craft before it was used as target practice!)" found [http://www.carrierbuilders.net/forum/index.php?s=71036e13cf43bdb17b3deb90cc2186d1&showtopic=415 here] Did it survive use in target practice?
It may be an aircraft rescue vessel. According to the list [http://newsite.navymemorial.org/ed_ship_designations.php here] , the acronym AVR has been used for an Aircraft Rescue Vehicle, but that appears to be a typo, Vessel is used elsewhere.
[http://nobadlie.tripod.com/ Home of AVR's] website has link to records of AVRs rescueing downed planes.
