Tiq Maya

Tiq Maya

Tiq Maya was the pioneer-group in Worldmusic and the very first and probably most successful Moroccan music group in the Netherlands and Europe. Tiq Maya recorded for EMI the single "La Tiq" and "Mimouna" and gave to a serial very successful concerts in the Netherlands, e.g. The Melkweg (Galaxy )and Vondelpark Open Air Theatre in Amsterdam, Festival Lochum, Rijnlandhal Arnhem, Het Arsenaal Vlissingen and reached 50.000 spectators during a Rock Agains Racism in the Amsterdamse Bos. In France the group toured with Nass El Ghiwane.

Tiq Maya was formed in Haarlem, the Netherlands, during the summer of 1974 by Mohamed el-Fers, Hamidou, Mohamed Ghazelhaj (also Belghazi) and Jilali Baladi. First the group was called Nass el-Ghorba, but changed the name in Tiq Maya after the arrival of Mustafa Bakbou and Akka Alaylou in May 1975.John van Vueren, later initiator of Parkpop The Hague was the first manager of the group.

In 1976 Mohamed el-Fers left for the first time to Italy, to do some recordings in the G7-studio of Torino as member/singer of the formation Medina.Mustafa Bakbou left for the Moroccan topgroup "Jil Jilala".Akka Alaylou left for Paris and was, until his sudden dead, part from of the accompaniment group of the French singer Catherine Le Forestier, sister of chansonier Maxime Le Forestier.Three years after splitting up Tiq Maya gave a number of reunionconcerts in Netherlands and France.

Controversy

The group Atlal with Mohamed el-Fers had in 1982 a nr. 1 hit in Egypt with the song "Back on the Nile", an English version of the song "Jilala". Mustafa Bakbou played and sang the same number in the Arab with the group Jil Jilala.
