The stadium was inaugurated onApril 27 ,1940 with the presence of the Brazilian PresidentGetúlio Vargas , the intervener Adhemar de Barros and themayor of São Paulo Prestes Maia. On that day, the first match at Pacaembu stadium was played, between Palestra Itália (Palestra Itália was Palmeiras name in the 1940s) and Coritiba. Palestra Itália beat Coritiba 6-2. The first goal of the stadium was scored by Coritiba's Zequinha. After this match, another match was played. Corinthians beat Atlético Mineiro 4-2.
