Millennium Giant] ] [ [http://www.efchistory.co.uk/Ted%20sagar.htm The History of Everton Football Club] ]He was known as a fearless goalkeeper of great ability. He was quite light in an era when goalkeepers were barged into more often than today. He joined Everton as an apprentice in 1929 after playing for Thorne Colliery in Yorkshire and made in debut in 1930. He played in the championship winning sides of 1931-32 and 1938-39 and the
FA Cup winning side of 1933.He made 499 appearances for Everton. This goalkeeping record for the club was only beaten by
Neville Southall in the 1994. For seven seasons duringWorld War II , professional football was suspended, and so Sagar could have easily added another 300 appearances in that time to extend his record. He retired from playing in 1952 and ran a pub in
Aintree . He died in October 1986, aged 76. He is remembered with great affection and respect by all who knew him.Sagar played four times for England, as well as once for Northern Ireland during the war.
