Poland covering eastern part ofPomeranian Voivodeship . These are modern designations for territory previously calledWest Prussia andRoyal Prussia and including the historical areas ofPomerelia ,Słupsk ,Chełmno Land ,Lubawa ,Michałów Land , andPomesania . The area was first termed Polish Pomerania ("Polskie Pomorze") by historian Stanisław Kujot in the late 19th century to distinguish it from Hither andFarther Pomerania and to lay Polish claim to a region that was then ruled by GermanPrussia . FollowingWorld War I , much of this area became part of the newSecond Polish Republic and, afterWorld War II , Poland gained the remainder of the area including the city ofGdańsk (Danzig). The current designations replaced Polish Pomerania since Farther Pomerania and a small part of Hither Pomerania was also ceded to Poland as part of the territories recovered from Germany.Population

Kashubians , who speak the Kashubian dialect of thePomeranian language . The Kashubians are organized in theKashubian-Pomeranian Association . Other indigenous people are theKociewiacy and theBorowiacy .Major towns
