bnews/Melbourne Star (January 2007- October 2008)Final issue October 2008 Country Australia Language English bnews was an Australian free weekly magazine focussing on gay and lesbian news, lifestyle and entertainment issues. It is published and circulated throughout metropolitan Melbourne and some Tasmanian outlets. According the bnews website, it is Melbourne's highest circulation gay and lesbian entertainment and lifestyle publication, with 100,000 readers.[1]
- Brother Sister
The publication began life as Brother Sister, launched by Bill Calder and Jeffrey Gradd in 1992. In 2000, the magazine was purchased by Satellite Media, which continued to distribute the title for just under 12 months, halted by the company's collapse.
- bnews
Co-founder Bill Calder then re-launched the magazine, but due to legal reasons was unable to use its original title. Instead, he took the 'B' and 'S' initials and inserted the word 'new' in between to create the current name, bnews.
- Melbourne Star
In October 2001, a second publication was launched titled Melbourne Star. Presented in a traditional newspaper format (rather than the magazine-style bnews), the two mediums ran on alternate weeks until December 2006
- bnews/Melbourne Star
The two publications were merged into the one bnews/Melbourne Star format, distributed weekly. bnews began a larger focus on its website, with issues available for download via .pdf files, as well as blogs from regular contributors such as Kaye Sera and Ben Wilson.[2]
The publication and website closed in October, 2008. Many of the staff began a new magazine in a similar style to bnews titled Southern Star, while Ben Wilson continues writing his blog, Sugacoobs, and Kaye Sera pursues her live cabaret performances and other interests.
